He Loved Too Many, Too Much,
Too
Long
He was here and he sang
us his beautiful song,
But he loved too many,
too much, too long.
Yes, he loved with a
capacity that only he was capable of,
And we all know this
came from his strong faith in the Man above.
This didn't start as
some believe in 1954,
By the waving of a magic
wand; no it started long before.
It really began in
January of 1935,
When as a new born he
first opened his eyes,
At that point in time is
when the love began to flow,
At first it was only to
his parents that his love would show;
But from then on his
love encompassed all;
even before he sang his
first song;
He had started at an
early age,
to love too many, too
much, too long.
In school he was laughed
at, and some would even ridicule,
They thought he was very
odd; his appearance didn't meet their rule.
Yes, he dared to be
different; he stood alone in a crowd,
But he always held his
head up and walked very proud.
His appearance did bring
him attention,
but not the kind he got
when he sang his song,
And even in school he
loved too many, too much, too long.
There would be some who
would stay with him till the end,
They were friends "in
the beginning" and some were even kin.
It was these who first
heard him sing his song,
As once again he loved
too many, too much, too long.
He went to the Louisiana
Hayride where he performed for a year;
And how the people loved
him, how they would cheer.
Then came the movies
which took him into a new career;
Playing all sorts of
roles from boxer to mountaineer.
He enjoyed the people
with whom he worked that listened to his song,
And again, he loved too
many, too much, too long.
He missed and yearned
for the personal touch with his fans,
So he left the studio
lots, and then his tours began.
He went from the
"Celluloid King" to the "King" of all he surveyed,
And his path in life
with loving fans would always be paved.
Once again he stood on
stage and he sang his song,
As he continued loving
too many, too much, too long.
From state to state, town to town, mile after mile;
He traveled to his
subjects always displaying that famous smile.
The face of beauty; the
voice of velvet; the magic he possessed,
All his great attributes
were there, how could we have guessed,
That those the closest
to him were doing him so wrong.
And on June 26th with
all his heart he would sing us his last song,
Simply, because he had
loved too many, too much, too long.
